Award for services to
Scottish Poultry Industry
THE HOWIE/SURGENOR CUP PRESENTED AT THE POULTRY CLUB OF SCOTLAND ANNUAL
DINNER AT THE DUNBLANE HYDRO HOTEL ON FRIDAY 28 OCTOBER 2005
The above trophy is awarded each year at The Poultry Club of Scotland annual
dinner to the person thought by the Committee that oversees this event to have
made a major contribution to the Scottish Poultry Industry.
This year's recipient was Dennis Surgenor, founding secretary. The tables
were turned on Dennis when fellow Committee members had him believe someone else
had been the successful nominee for this prestigious award. Dennis was visibly
shocked on learning in front of over 200 guests from last year's winner Willie
Law, a veterinarian from Dalgety Bay, that he was this year's recipient.
This annual event, which was started 10 years ago by founder members Dennis
Surgenor and Tom Howie, attracting at the time 97 guests to the inaugural
dinner, has blossomed to become the UK poultry industry event of the year with
guests coming from far and wide across mainland Britain. This year's speaker was
Peter Mitchell of the Aberdeen Press and Journal, and the evening's programme
was chaired by Steve Mitchell of Mitchell's Chicken.
Amongst Dennis' many achievements is the formation of the Scottish Egg
Producer Retailers' Association (SEPRA) in 1970. Today, 35 years on, it remains
the major organisation representing Scottish egg production.
